Benefits of Apprenticeship

As An Apprentice You...
Earn while you learn

One of the best things about being in an apprenticeship program is the ability to earn while you learn. While you learn a trade, you’ll receive an industry-appropriate wage. And your earnings will increase with each year of the apprenticeship program you successfully complete.

As An Apprentice You...
Improve your job prospects

When you successfully complete an apprenticeship program, you become a certified journeyman in your trade. Journeymen are always in demand, so watch your job prospects start moving!

As An Apprentice You...
Can transform yourself
An apprentice becomes a certified journeyman after

  • completing all on-the-job-training requirements, and

  • receiving a satisfactory report from the supervisor

  • successfully completing all levels of technical training for their particular trade, and

  • passing all exams, and

  • providing the completed record book to the Apprenticeship and Industry Training office.

How Do I Qualify for an Apprenticeship Program?

You need to

  • complete grade 12 (some trades don’t require grade 12, but many employers prefer to hire high-school graduates)

OR

  • write and pass an entrance exam

OR

  • take part in the Registered Apprentice Program (RAP) while you’re still in high school, and earn an income and credit toward your apprenticeship and your high school diploma. (Visit www.tradesecrets.org for RAP information.)

Getting There: Becoming an Apprentice as an AAAP Participant

Take just THREE steps to become a registered apprentice

1. Meet with a career counsellor at Aboriginal Futures Career & Training Centre, Metis Nation Employment Services, or Tsuu T’ina Nation employment centre.

2. The counsellor will help you

  • decide which trade is right for you. There are 51 trades in Alberta. For the complete list of trades, go to www.tradesecrets.org

  • find out if you have the right qualifications for that trade. (If you don’t, you will be told how to acquire those you need.) set up a time for you to write the Apprenticeship Industry Training test.

  • if you do qualify for the AAAP program the counselor will refer you to the AAAP.

3.  Prepare for employer interviews
The local Project Officer of the AAAP will arrange interviews with employers looking for apprenticeship candidates in your trade. Prepare well for those interviews. The employment centre is ready to help you.

4.  Commit!
After a successful interview, the employer will register you as an apprentice. Make the commitment to complete all training requirements. (If you’re not successful in the first round of interviews, go back to step two and get help with your interview preparation.)
