How The Alberta Aboriginal Apprenticeship Project Works
Becoming an AAAP Candidate
Purpose:
To assist urban First Nation (Treaty Status) individuals to
secure employment.
Eligible Individuals:
All individuals must be a First Nation (Treaty Status) member
who resides in an urban area within Treaty Seven's boundaries.
This includes Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Pincher Creek
and surrounding urban centres. Treaty Seven members must be
living off reserve for 3 consecutive years or more for
eligibility.
Urban First Nation members may:

be currently in receipt of E.I. (employment Insurance) or in
receipt of E.I. within the past three years

be a Social Assistance recipient
-
require work experience to develop skills for employment
Eligible Employers:
Employers who agree to provide work experience to eligible
individuals who would not ordinarily be considered for
employment in the absence of a wage subsidy.
Employers who provide work experience with the intent to hire
upon completion of the subsidy.
Term:
The length
of time wage subsidy is provided is dependant on the needs of
the individual and the employer. The length of time will be
negotiated between the Labour Market Consultant and the Employer
and will be based on the amount of time an individual will need
to be trained for the job.
Contributions:
Wages: The percentage of wages covered
under this program is negotiated between the Labour Market
Consultant and the Employer The percentage negotiated will be
based on need and ability to pay.
Training: A percentage of costs for
skills training may be provided (dependant on whether training
cannot be provided on the job).
Application Procedures:
Employers must
submit a letter or proposal outlining the name of participant,
work experience involved, proposed length of training and wage
(T7EDC can assist the employer to identify an individual upon
request).
