The Trade Winds to Success Project will
aim to recruit Aboriginal people on a priority basis. The program
is for those living within the cities of Edmonton and Calgary
who have an interest in pursuing training and employment in
the one of the following trades.
1)
Boilermaker 2) Ironworker 3) Carpenter 4)
Plumber 5) Welder 6) Steam/Pipefitter.
About The Program
This twenty (20) week program begins with a three (3) week Trade
Streaming Process involving: assessment testing, tours from the
Union Training Coordinators to visit training sites, shops and
local education facilities to provide an informed career choice
of what is involved in each of these trades. Clients then flow
through to the Informed Career Decision Making course to ensure
their trade choice is right for them.

Clients then move to the Pre-Apprenticeship
Training.

Write Entrance exam 4 from Apprenticeship
Industry and Trades

Progress to 8 weeks of union shop and
hand tools training with safety tickets

Employment with the unions or your own
employer of choice

Eligibility
-
Aboriginal people (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) residing in
Edmonton or Calgary

Unemployed, underemployed or employment threatened
-
Active EI Benefit recipient, eligible for EI Reach Back, on
social assistance or not currently receiving these benefits

Target groups for priority consideration are Aboriginal youth,
women, and persons with disabilities

Possess a minimum Grade 10 or equivalent based on TABE testing.
At least 18 years of age

Have an interest in pursuing one of the specified trades of
Boilermaker, Ironworker, Carpenter, Plumber, Steam/Pipefitter,
or Welder

Ready, Willing and Able to pursue training and a career in the
above trades
Intake Process
Aboriginal Futures Career & Training
Centre and Metis Nation Employment Services will
conduct a service needs determination with each client to verify
their interest in participating in the Trade Winds to Success
program. All interested persons must be registered clients of
Aboriginal Futures Career & Training Centre or Metis Nation
Employment Services. Referrals are made to Trade Winds to
Success Program by either Aboriginal
Futures Career & Training Centre or Metis Nation
Employment Services.
Living allowances are available for eligible clients.
Applications for living allowance for the Trade Winds to Success
Program are made through Aboriginal Futures Career & Training
Centre or Metis Nation Employment Services.
Clients will receive a stipend payment to be determined by Trade
Winds during the first three weeks of the program. This is the
trades streaming portion of the program and living allowance is
not provided for this period of time. Those choosing not to
continue after the initial Trade Streaming Process will return
to the employment centers for revised intervention planning for
a better career fit.
